Audio Puzzle

Hello
This is the first time I have used this forum and as my user name suggests I am well past the first flush of youth and hope you young un's can answer a couple of questions for me.

I have a Panasonic tx26lxd hdtv and since having v+ HDMI installed have noticed the following. If I am watching cable, with sound through amp to 5.1, then switch to digital freeview the picture changes but sound stays on the cable channel. Analogue freeview shows a very noticeable lip sync issue. However, if I put v+ into standby everthing is ok again. Is there a way I can watch cable/freeview with the correct match without switching off v+?

Also is it better to watch in 720p or 1080i? I have to say that, perhaps due to having a small screen, I can't honestly see any difference. As a HD novice I am still feeling my way so your thoughts would be welcome, preferably not too technical!

Thnak you very much

Hi Silver Surfer,

to CF

I don't know exactly, sounds to me like one or more of your devices might need tuning in to the AV properly, as I said, not sure, someone else will know for sure, stick around, I'm sure they'll sort your problem out

Welcome from a child of the '50's.

Looking at the specs for your TV it's a 1366 x 768 panel, so it's native resolution is 720p it'll have to scale 1080i down to fit. From what I've read you don't get any benefit from 1080i unless you have a 42+ inch panel.

Are you running your sound to the amp from the TV or from the stb? If from the STB then that's the sound that the amp will be picking up from no matter what you set your TV to. If from the TV, then it should be the sound from the TV and be whatever you're watching at that moment.

Re: Audio Puzzle

It's possible that the optical in to the amp from V+ will 'override' any analogue signal (ie into the SCART). So if the V+ is On, then the amp will always play the V+ sound. You may also have noticed comments to turn on the 'HDMI Audio Override' option in the V+ settings menus - this will give you 5.1 through your amp on some programs through the BBC HD channel and FilmFlex HD movies. Note that you will probably get no sound from your TV speakers when watching these programs with 5.1 soundtracks.

As for the 720/1080 question, it's your eyes that make the ultimate decision. As Delta Whiskey says your panel's res is 768, you TV will either upscale 720 to 768 or downscale 1080 to 768. Neither are mathematically elegant operation. All scalars are variable so it's best to try and see which produces the best results.

Oh, and enjoy HD!
