V+ and Philips HDTV with no HDMI

I have recently had a Virgin V+ box installed but my 1+ yr old Philips HDTV has no input for HDMI. I went out and bought a HDMI to DVI lead but this does not work. I've tried phoning both Virgin and Philips but to no avail. Virgin say it won't work and Philips say it should. Can anyone help?

Hi Johnny, In what sequence are you using the HDVI/DVI and scart cables and what are you getting at each stage? It hasn't been a straightforward plug and play scenario for some of us.

Re: V+ and Philips HDTV with no HDMI

Does your TV have component available as an input? You could use that instead from the V+.
I assume you are selecting the correct input on the TV and changing the V+ to HiDefHDMI in Settings.

It does work

plug your HDMI>DVI lead in

you also need phono plugs for audio (not carried by DVI)

set your V+ to 1080 (mine doesn't work on 720 & it may be same for you)

enjoy

Re: V+ and Philips HDTV with no HDMI

Don't forget after you choose the HDMI option you will need to switch your TV over to the correct AV input for the DVI. A few have gotten caught out as it turns off the scart so the picture goes blank on the scart input channel. Once you've switched over to your DVI channel you should see the screen again and press 'text' to confirm.

Hope this helps.

With an HD TV you will get HD programmes (although not that much available) and you will most probably notice a marked improvement in Standard Definition. Don't forget that a HDMI TO DVI connection won't carry sound so you will also need to get a set of audio leads. Neither of which the installing engineers provide.

Re: V+ and Philips HDTV with no HDMI

Hi,

I have a philips HDTV and it's working fine with the V+ HiDef. It was a bit confusing to setup but it works.

First you need is a HDMI to DVI conector and some cables to conect the sound on the V+ box to your tv. Then you need to select the settings option on the home menu and from there select the audio visual settings. Now select the HIDef option and then either 720w or 1080w. Press the ok button and it will tell you it needs to test your tv. Press the OK button. At this point your screen will go blank or blue. Use the input selector button on your Philips remote to select the DVI-I : HD input and your picture should come back. Press the text button on the V+ remote to confirm the test and that's it. Remember you will need to select the DVI-I in future when you want to watch something using the V+ box.

One little gotcha, if you need to reboot the box or turn it off at the mains then you will need to setup the HiDef all over again as it does not seem to save the settings.

hope this helps

Mike

This will depend on your TV, but normally the DVI video input has a stereo mini-jack immediately beside it, so it is that mini-jack you need to feed the audio into when you select DVI source for video. Try using an audio converter lead for two phonos (at the V+ end) to one stereo mini-jack (at the TV end).

Re: V+ and Philips HDTV with no HDMI

I had V+ installed last night and then found out that my Bush TV (the one off the back page of the Argos) didn't have a HDMI socket. I looked in the user manual for the TV to find out that i needed a HDMI-to-DVI converter cable. I'll be buying one of those today.

Oh and the V+ installer said that the HD cable he had given me was only any good for 720 not to be used with 1080.

Re: V+ and Philips HDTV with no HDMI

12noon, don't forget to pick up audio cables. They plug in next to the DVI socket. I used the HDMI cable left by the engineer with a DVI converter and my bush works in 1080 just fine.

Re: V+ and Philips HDTV with no HDMI

I have my Hi Def working fine now but I have one final question. Why on a lot of channels is my picture smaller than the width of the screen? It has big black bands down both sides.
