V+ Component Connection

I'm resigned to having to use component to my projector when my V+ is installed next week.

I have an av phono cable (Yellow, Red & White connections) that I currently use from a scart break out connector with the V box (Samsung 2100C).

Would it be possible to use this cable on the V+ component connections with a female phono to male VGA converter (which I will have to buy) at the projector end or will I have to buy a new Component to VGA cable?

Re: V+ Component Connection

Eh?

Why would you try to convert component to VGA? What's the make and model of projector you are buying?

Also, although the composite cables you've mentioned will actually work with component video, the quality will be awful as the impedance is wrong. You need proper component cables for a decent picture. I bought a 10m set from Sapphire for about £22 delivered.

Re: V+ Component Connection

Unfortunately the projector doesn't have component connections but is able to receive component video through the VGA sockets.

I could wait and buy a component to VGA cable like the one here (or pay more at another site that has it in stock ).

I had a look at Sapphire Systems here but can't find a component to VGA cable. The alternative is to buy a component and get a component to VGA converter but I guess that a single cable is likely to give a better quality picture.

The Projector is a Toshiba TDP TW90 - bought it a couple of years ago.

Re: V+ Component Connection

Ah. Righto. Well, I've never tried to source component -> vga. I'd buy that 5m one you linked to, and a genderbender and whatever extra length you need from Sapphire (think they charge about £4 for a genderbender).

Good luck!

(a) you will have no success using an udio cable to carry video signals - the cable is simply not good enough. You need a component-to-component video cable, which are normally sold as a triple coax cable, with plugs coded Red, Green, Blue for component connections Pr, Y, Pb.

(b) your projector can be configured to accept Component signals (Pr, Y, Pb) on the pins of the VGA input which normally carry R,G,B signals. So you can simply use a normal RGB-to-VGA breakout adapter with your component inputs substituting for the RGB ones. No electronics is required in the adapter, it's just a cable adapter.

Might be the way - the cable seems cheap compared to the one in the link that has component to VGA as part of the cable. I know it tends to be a case of you get what you pay for so I wonder whether getting the single cable might give better quality. How well does your component cable work and what length is it? (Loughborough is where I was born and bred by the way!)

ref (a) - yes I was being quite stoopid to suggest that - the two audio cables are clearly unsuitable but I wasn't thinking clearly!

(b) I'm happy that the signal will be accepted without conversion and, I think, the signal will be easily configured using the projector menu but I will wait and see what happens when I plug it in. I've checked the resolutions that the component input (via VGA) will accept and it will cover 720p and 1080i so that will be fine.

I just have to decide now whether to

1. Buy the cable here with component one end and VGA connection on the other @ £28.99 hoping that it will be in stock before the V+ arrives.

2. Buy the same cable available now but for substantially more here or here for about £45 (a massive difference to £28.99 that).

3. Buy the component cable here, for £9.90 as suggested by ShadowTD and the adaptor here for £9.99 (probably a few quid p&p - which will take it up closer to the option 1 cost).

It seems like option three is the best bet but if I buy the cheaper cable with a connector will that significantly compromise the signal quality when compared to the single cable with component to VGA in option 1? I would usually spend a bit more on most things to get a better quality option, as long as it makes a difference.

Thanks to you both for your responses and thanks also Robin for the help that I have got from your website over the years!

Re: V+ Component Connection

Ooooh choices....

Although the flying leads to the phono sockets on the adaptor mentioned in 3) look a bit spindly I think this is probably your best bet. Sapphire are pretty decent at dispatch but they do take a couple of days - get ordering!!

Hope you get it all sorted - watching BBCHD on an 80" screen is the shiznit!

Re: V+ Component Connection

Don't know why I'm having such a problem getting on with it - I like to try to make the best choice based on the information that I have. I'll go for option 3 and get ordering.

Thanks again for your help.

Parents are coming down from Loughborough next week so I might try to convince them of the value of V+ while they're here - assuming the install goes ok next Thursday!

That's the cables ordered. Just have to hope they arrive by Thursday next week.
