I think the picture is fantastic, but it really depends on the programme that is showing of course.

Re: BBC HD to continue....
That is complete cods. I've had experience of both. V+ BBC HD is comparable to Sky HD BBC HD. I know the transport stream is different, but they both look equally good.

Re: BBC HD to continue....
No way is bbc hd via the scientific atlanta 8300(V+hd) cable receiver better than via a sky hd thomson receiver or via a non-sky satellite receivers humax hdci-2000 or pace 810xe or topfield satellite receivers i have tested it myself,
I will be happy to show any one in my living room the difference between them if you are in south wales

Re: BBC HD to continue....
interesting, perhaps its the display device your using, care to share that info?.
the other implication is that the topfield had a better decoder chip or that the transport streams are being re-transcoded perhaps by Virgin Media (they do have to use the older lossy Mpeg2 after all)from the original content?, do both Virgin and sky take their original content from the same source feed? and what is this original content source mpeg2/mpeg4-AVC (perhaps in its lossless mode?) or one of the BBC DVB master formats?, if so which one.

Re: BBC HD to continue....
Not sure as i have not done any network or headend work for ntl/telewest(virgin) in a while but i can find out,
I have tested it on my pioneer plasma and both my philips & samsung lcd's,
It could be the S/A 8300 V+HD but virgin only do 1 HD receiver so there is no other way i can tell at home,

Re: BBC HD to continue....
"The Trust would need to conduct a public value test, whilst Ofcom would be looking at the possible impact of a BBC HD service on commercial rivals."
i wonder if the trust etc ok this as a good thing, we might get to see the winterhill (and perhaps other) transmitters finally getting the HD feed as it was already set to take it but someone stopped that as it was deemed the northwest didnt need it but the south did.
it might be that if winterhill (one of the largest transmitters in the UK) gets it then the USB2 DVB-T stick and coreAVC will be a very good investment after all 8)
regarding the transport streams , is there anyone here that can take a direct sample of the HD-BBC.TS (not saved as .mpeg)at home and put up a small one or two minute sample somewere to compare, that might be a good way to see and discuse.
a DVB-C and DVB-S(or is it '2')card will be needed to grab them though (as their not encrypted it should be easy).

I've never compared the two but the quality of good HD broadcasts on my Panasonic plasma connected to the V+ box is fantastic. I find it difficult to believe that sky is better to any discernable degree.

Re: BBC HD to continue....
The HD picture qual on mine @ 1080 is flawless
I suppose you could bat 'opinions' back and forth over SkyHD vs V+ but HD content still accounts for very little viewing at the mo which leaves both of us watching mainly S/D content
V+ upscales S/Def content & SkyHD can't
= 90% of all viewing is poor on SKYHD compared to V+ & that's not my opinion - it's a fact!

Re: BBC HD to continue....
Sorry - you're quite right.
I'm very pleased that the trial is (hopefully) continuing because (as I believe I posted in another thread) even when I was at the in-laws (who have 'top tier' Sky HD) it was the most watched HD channel. I've also been pleasently surprised at the Beeb showing the occasional HD movie as well.

Re: BBC HD to continue....
I think its great news. The BBC is recognised world wide for its broadcasting prowess, and adding a dedicated HD channel to its portfolio helps to maintain its image.
I have visited the US on a number of occasions, and many people that I have visited or spoke to are very keen to point out that the BBC news service in the US is one of the best.
