HDTV with DVI connection

Anyone out there had TV drive installed with a DVI connection at the TV end. I am getting mine on the 2nd Feb, the guy on the phone in Delhi said the engineer would bring the correct cable, but then he didn't know what DVI was.

Mine is connected to DVI but I had to buy a cable with HDMI connection at one end and DVI at the other. The cable NTL supplies - and only if you ask for it when booking installation - is HDMI to HDMI. You could use this with a DVI to HDMI converter plug on your TV.

Re: HDTV with DVI connection

Be aware that unless your DVI-accepting device (eg: a PC monitor) supports HDCP, then you may find yourself without a picture for some programmes (ie those broadcast with copy protection enabled).

Re: HDTV with DVI connection

Thanks for the info. I have confirmed with installs, after a little pushing, that they do only supply the HDMI-HDMI cable, so I'll have to get the right one bfore next week.

.

You can buy a DVI to HDMI adaptor at Comet, though they are the expensive 'Monster' brand.

This is a good site for adapters, just make sure you get it the right way round!, that post may be the wrong male/female connector, depends on what you need.

Re: HDTV with DVI connection

I got an HDMI to DVI cable from ebay for about six quid, works just fine on my Philips HDTV.

Just remember that DVI doesn't carry audio, though, so you'll also need an audio cable between the TV Drive and your TV.

Re: HDTV with DVI connection

On thing you need to watch out for is whether your TV supports HDCP over DVI. If you set the TVDrive output to HDMI then all output is HDCP controlled. This means that if your HDTV does not support HDCP over DVI then you can view nothing at all (except the menus). My TV was supposedly HDCP compliant but seems not to be over a HDMI->DVI Cable.
The solution I adopted was to buy a Component to VGA convertor which allows an analogue digital signal from the component output of the TV Drive to be output as VGA, which my TV also supports). You can get these from http://www.mysimplemedia.com/product...x/YPbPrbox.htm @ £40.
(You will also need component and VGA cables)
This works fine when setting the TVDrive output to HD Component with the caveat that it outputs strictly at 720p and if your TV has a different resolution (mine has 1024 * 768) you might get some black bars - on my TV I can zoom the picture slightly to get rid of these.
It is certainly worth doing, even with the paucity of true HD content available as the TVDrive upscales SD output very well (Some programmes are better than others)

Re: HDTV with DVI connection

I have HDMI to DVI and works OK but the TV defaults to 16:9 or 4:3 that leaves black bars. With Scart I can use widescreen that gets rid of the lines.

It seems OK during the adverts that are full screen then flicks back.

Any ideas why the TV disables the other options on DVI?

You could always change your display output settings to use '720 wide' or '1080 wide', which will stretch the image to fill the screen.. no?

Re: HDTV with DVI connection

Is this something I do on the V+ box or TV?

Ignore me - being thick. Never noticed the wide options by pressing again. Looks good now and can even see HD BBC!

On the V+ box, it's in the settings menu.
