Hmm yes, the shoe is now on the other foot.
Thousands of American comedians may now have to rewrite their material or face oblivion.
As we found out, it does not matter how much you tell the public that "beef is safe", most people will just stop buying it and eat something else. Why take even the slightest risk. Other counties will certainly ban importation of it (Japan has already done so).
Trouble was that in our case the beef was in fact not safe at all until they stopped feeding cattle with animal based food products and then killed off all the ones that had eaten such products. Even so, it took a while before people dipped their toe back into the water and started buying beef regularly again. We are constantly reminded of it even today as new cases of the human variant still crop up due to the long time it takes for the disease to make its way to the brain and the symptoms to appear.
If I was over there I wouldn't eat most american beef anyway. It's full of growth hormones unless otherwise stated (such a practice is banned in the UK and we do not import such beef).
I think people will wait to see if it is one isolated case but in the meantime any caution by the public and importing countries will cause their beef industry to suffer very badly. The government would do well to be as transparent as possible about it (unlike our government(s)).
