Cable Forum Newsletter - Issue 3 (May 2005)

Welcome to the third edition of the Cable Forum Newsletter, which covers a round up of events since the last edition in January 2005.

IN THIS ISSUE:

* Announcements
* Recent Cable Forum News
* Helpful Post of the Month
* Team News
* Clan News

# ANNOUNCEMENTS #

* Links with ntl

We have recently been persuing some more formal links and Cable Forum Team members, Mick & Simon (Nemesis) recently met with the Chief Executive Officer of ntl (Simon Duffy) and Managing Director, ntl Central Operations & Business Improvement - (Peter Wilcock), to discuss ways we could work together to improve the ntl customer experience.

We will be working more closely with ntl in the future, in particular ntl taking a far more bigger interest in the customer feedback that is posted on this site. Keep an eye out for further news and further developments regarding this on our homepage and just to quash any rumours, we have not, nor will we be selling the site to anyone. The sites independence is important to us and we will remain just as we are, independant.

* Links with Telewest

On the strength of the ongoing talks with ntl, Telewest have also been approached, and discussions are currently underway to seek and assist Telewest customers that post on Cable Forum.

Server :
As a result of increasing traffic to the site we upgraded the memory in our server to 1GB - since this time we have been very stable, it was a much needed upgrade. We have also recently installed some optimization features which should make the forum run even faster.

Just to remind you that in the event of a failure updates will be posted on the test forum - see http://www.cableforum.info/board/forumdisplay.php?f=29

New and Upcoming Board Features :
Apart from a bit of optimization, no new features have been installed in the last few months, a few hacks are being looked at, and there have been some updates

* vBulletin - The main forum software was upgraded to version 3.0.7.

* Chat - The Flashchat software has been updated to version 4.0.6.

* Front-Row Movies - This site, run by one of our members, is now hosted by Cable Forum. The site can be found at www.frontrow-movies.co.uk

* Most ever users - this has been enhanced for members/guests/chatters etc

We are always on the lookout for enhancements, if you have an idea then you can post it in the website forum or contact the resident tweaker (Paul M).

Some features we are currently looking at are ;

* POP3 (e-mail) web client.

* Quizzes - we are looking at a dedicated quiz hack.

* We will also be looking at vBulletin 3.5.0 when it goes beta (in June).

Cable Forum Donations Link:
Sadly servers are not free. It costs ?79 month to run the dedicated server that Cable Forum runs on. This cost is covered by the team, but after many enquiries from members we have added a link on the forum to allow donations towards our costs. Donations are completely voluntary and anonymous. Contributors get an advert free forum, and an extra Private Message allowance. The link can be found at the top of the forum home page and on search results pages. There is also a link to purchase items from Amazon - any purchases made via this link will earn us commision, which again goes towards our costs.

Red Nose Day 2005 :
On March 11th the team stepped down for the day and handed the running of the site over to a team of people who had donated to Comic Relief. Eight members (Kits, TheBlueRaja, Dilligaf1701, Greencreeper, Marge, Punky, Web Junkie, Scastle) did a sterling job, despite some severe tests (and a few renegade mods .....). We also raised money by selling reputation points and also just accepting donations. In all we raised ?335.

# CABLE FORUM NEWS #

We continue to provide news articles on the site, some of which are Cable Forum exclusives - some recent articles include ;

* ntl and Telewest finally ready to merge.

* ntl's CEO questioned over Customer Service.

# MOST HELPFUL POST OF THE MONTH #

Incognitas continues to run this poll each month in our Website Discussion area - you can vote for what you think is the "Most helpful Post of the Month".

The last few months winners are;

January - TheBlueRaga
February - Paul D
March - Ignition
April - Ikthius & Alan Melon

# TEAM NEWS #

Stuartbe & Steve H stepped down as moderators - our thanks go to them for all their efforts while moderating. Paul M got a new job in March after being made redundant in February. Richard M got promoted to Application & Web Developer in May, and spends his average working day writing C# code, with a little PHP & XHTML/CSS 2 on the side.

Nemesis was finally persuaded to change his name to Simon M.
