The following programs/drivers work in XP x64:
  • Mozilla Firefox (also Flash plugin)
  • Mozilla Thunderbird
  • Teamspeak
  • Winamp
  • DivX Codec & Player
  • MSN Messenger 7 (beta)
  • Java Runtime
  • Filezilla FTP client
  • PowerDVD
  • eBay Turbo Lister
  • Internet Explorer 64 Bit - this has the added bonus of ActiveX controls being coded in 32 Bit, therefore most spyware won't install.
You should be fairly safe using this browser for a couple of months, until 64 Bit goes mainstream.
  • Renoise VST Tracker - runs perfectly.
  • NVidia video card drivers - no reported issues.
  • Creative Audigy 2 Beta drivers - run fine, but no THX console or MediaSource Player.
  • Irfanview - installs and runs with no problems.
  • Putty SSH client
  • Avast Anti-Virus (dedicated 64-bit version is already available)
  • BitTornado - installs and runs with no problems.
  • Halo - Combat Evolved.
  • Half Life 2.
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell.
  • GTA III & GTA:Vice City.

Update (9th April 2005) - The above games have been moved to the "no issues" part because I've fixed the slow-motion & video stuttering problems!
What you must do is disable "Cool & Quiet" in the BIOS (AMD only) then all games will run full speed - truely bizarre. I suspect that it's because the CPU was running at half speed(ish) which was then making the games which rely on clock cycles for timing run in slow motion.

The following programs/drivers will run but with errors:
  • Call Of Duty - CoD installs with no problems, however United Offensive will not and gives an error about an "incorrect Windows version".
What you must do is this:
Copy everything in the data/uo directory on the first & second CD to your c:/program files/call of duty/ folder (example).
You can then patch the game, although you have to point the patcher to the correct directory.
Update - Tested with new ATI drivers:
Game plays with no flaws now, the graphic quality is the same as 32-Bit Windows (update: see comment about ATI driver below). Only remaining issue is UO installation.
  • ATI drivers -
[b]Issue - Rebooting causes the machine to start in 60Hz when not using a monitor driver.
ATI have responded to this and have the following fix (which worked perfectly):
    Quote:
    Please try the following setting:

Refresh rate stays at 60Hz when using non-DDC monitor under Windows 2000 and Windows XP

This issue affects ATI products using ATI Enhanced Display Drivers under Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

When using a non-DDC monitor the refresh rate used will remain at 60Hz regardless of the refresh rate selected in the Windows DISPLAY PROPERTIES panel.

Under Windows 2000/XP, ATI Display adapters take advantage of the DDC signals sent by the monitor. These signals indicate what resolutions and refresh rates the monitor is capable of.

Some older monitors are not DDC compliant and do not provide these signals. When no DDC information is received from the monitor, the video card defaults to a maximum resolution of 1600x1200 and a maximum refresh rate of 60 Hz.

These default settings can be changed from within the Windows 2000/XP Display Properties as follows.

To increase the maximum allowable resolution or refresh rate....

    - Open the DISPLAY PROPERTIES.
    - Select the SETTINGS Tab.
    - Click the ADVANCED button.
    - Select the ATI DISPLAYS tab.
    - Click the MONITOR button.
    - Under the ATTRIBUTES choose the maximum resolution and refresh rate supported by your monitor using the drop down menus.
    - Click the OK button.

Once this change has been made select the resolution you wish to use as usual using the SETTINGS tab. The refresh rate can be changed using the MONITOR tab in the ADVANCED options in Display Panel.

WARNING: Increasing the resolution or refresh rate beyond the monitors capabilities can DAMAGE your monitor. Please refer to your monitor documentation for the settings specific to your monitor.
  • Medal Of Honor Pacific Assault - No sound (?)
Update - Tested with new ATI drivers: framerate improved to be about the same as 32-Bit Windows but now has no sound!!!? I expect this to be either a DirectX or Creative sound card driver problem.
Further Update - After investigation, I believe this to be an issue with DirectSound.
What happens is this: Load game, video stutters (FIXED) then sound cuts out. After this all system sound will be muted with no way to get it back!
I tried loading the game with "Miles Fast 2D Positional Audio", "Creative EAX 3" and "Dolby Surround". Neither worked.
After quitting the game, no other apps will have sound access - solved by reboot.

[i]Update - this issue seems to be intermittent.

The following programs/drivers do not work:
  • Daemon Tools
  • Tomb Raider Angel Of Darkness - installs but will not run.
  • MobilePhoneTools (CD came with Motorola V3) - installs software but Windows cannot find a suitable driver on the CD so your computer cannot communicate with the phone.
Update - one workaround I've found is to email any files to your phone and vice versa. If you run a Motorola V3 this is straightforward - PM me for info if you're stuck.

(more to follow)

These tests were carried out on a clean install of Windows XP Pro x64 Edition running on an AMD Athlon64 FX53, 1GB Corsair XMS3200Pro RAM, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, 74GB WD Raptor SATA HD, Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro.
