Looking for houses online, and guess what...
We're relocating to Glasgow later this year ... wuppee! We've been looking on the 'net for potential places to move, and getting a feel for what's available, and for how much. The best site we've found so far is www.gspc.co.uk - lots of information, downloadable schedules, frequently updated.
All was fine and dandy until about a fortnight ago when the site suddenly stopped responding. I can run a traceroute to it, I can ping it, but it just won't load. My browser either starts to load the site at appallingly low speed (inevitably failing before getting anywhere near done) or returns a 'timed out' message.
So I just went to Nominet and ran a whois search, thinking I might phone someone tomorrow and ask what's going on. And guess what I found:
http://195.66.240.211/cgi-bin/whois.....co.uk&x=0&y=0
Domain Name:
gspc.co.uk
Registrant:
Glasgow Solicitors Property Centre
Registrant's Agent:
NTL Internet Limited [Tag = CABLEOL]
URL: http://www.ntl.com
Whyohwhyohwhy am I surprised at this? Who should I call? Should I bother?

It seems to work fine for me. Have you tried changing proxies?

Works fine here.
FYI: GSPC have a block of 32 ip addresses allocated to them by NTL.

Now why didn't I think of that?
OK, just tried it and GSPC is back. So, some questions:
1. How can a proxy be borked in such a way that only one website is unavailable? We have had no problems with other sites lately.
2. My nthw pages load more slowly now I've 'switched off' the specified proxy in my network prefs. Presumably I am now back at the mercy of a transparent proxy in Luton. Can anyone recommend me a reliable and trustworthy, preferably non-NTL, proxy as an alternative?

1. I'm sure someone will be able to tell you why, but I have seen it before. Hotmail was gone for two weeks on end, and everything else worked fine
2. Still NTL proxies, but Robin Walker provides a list of proxies on his site
Try a few to find one that works well?
Glad it works again

Just trying to get my head round your 'Offers Over' property bidding system so far ... gspc.co.uk is useful at the moment because it gives us an idea what properties are likely to come up in the areas we're interested in. Good secondary schooling is an important factor so we have Bridge of Weir/Houston, Bearsden/Milngavie and Jordanhill/Scotstoun in mind (West End is more hope than expectation at this stage!) Fortunately my in-laws are in the West End so we'll have plenty of help when the searching starts in earnest. We won't be on the market down here before July, I think.
Thanks for the proxy tips, everyone!
