ntl Telewest beats Sky to wins rights to near live clips to Premier League matches

ntl Telewest today confirmed that it will acquire the exclusive right to offer ‘near live’ ( Was on Sky Sports 1 every Weekend ) clips of all Premier League football matches for the 2007/8-2009/10 seasons over the internet. Uniquely, these clips will be available to ntl Telewest customers on-demand for up to a week after transmission of a football match – the ultimate catch-up package.

Consumers will be able to re-live the best of the action from all the week’s Premier League matches on their PC, laptop or internet-enabled device. Packaged in a range of exciting formats that add real value to the consumer, the rights will be creatively bundled with the company’s broadband and mobile services.

Together with a range of other premium content, the rights will form part of a truly differentiated content proposition that enhances the consumer’s experience, reinforces the appeal of the company’s services and - following the recent acquisition of Virgin Mobile - fully exploits its ‘quad-play’ capability.

Commenting on the acquisition, Malcolm Wall, CEO of ntl Telewest’s Content division said: “Acquiring these rights is good news for the company and its consumers. As the UK’s largest broadband provider and the UK’s only ‘quad play’ operator, they are a perfect fit with our business. For football fans they will form the basis of the ultimate catch-up service and help underpin a genuinely value-added service.”

weeeh all the people in ntl areas that have no digital and broadband cabling will be pleased it doesnt benefit them as ntl still wont invest to enable universal service.

Does anyone know the cost of this acquisition?

For a media company, ntl seem to have done a spectacularly poor job at publicising this. Has it been picked up by anyone?
