Carving a career at NTL

Hi, i am new here..
I have been offered a trainee accountant role with NTL, in the finance department.

i was wondering whether it is possible to carve out a career at NTL. Any individuals here work for NTL?

Cheers.

Moreover, i just want to say thanks to NTL for giving me this opportunity, and the whole application process was extremely professional. I have yet to try their BB package though, i am currently with PIPEX who have not let me down.

Re: Carving a career at NTL

to the forum...

Working at NTL is a bit hit-and-miss. In a lot of respects, they are a great company. Most departments (excluding CS) treat their employees well, and they get frequent treats... Like meals/nights out and fun days during day while they are at work (quite a few lately, what with the world cup). They are also very generous in benefits & bonuses. They give you things like private health care for you and your partner, more days off than most, and discounts on services. Now ntl have merged with Virgin Mobile, employees will most likely get discounts at Virgin Megastore, Virgin Holidays, and Virgin Mobile...

However, they do seem to make a lot of people redundant, especially after a merger. One would guess they won't merge with anyone else for a while, so more than likely this isn't something you have to worry about... However, organisation within ntl:telewest is pretty dire, so you can't take that for granted... Lots of speculation... But as Zingle says, even if it does happen, the training and work you'll do, is all good experience for the future.

Hope it all goes well... Just wait and see if you like it really...

(btw, I don't work for NTL but my bird does...)

Re: Carving a career at NTL

Hrm they don't give the networks staff a thing, apart from those in the ivory towers at Hook.

I'd say you're highly unlikely to carve out a career but take the position and get what you can from it. The days of people working for a company for 40 years and taking home the gold watch are long gone.

You should be alright for a while though, they'll need accountants to count the money they'll save outsourcing customer service, tech support and networks.

Erm, where did you get that info from Punky? No-one I knew was treated particularly well, including me. Nights out??? They'll pay 25 quid towards your Xmas do, that's it. World Cup? For the Board members and company directors maybe, but certainly no-one more subservant than that...

All true, ntl benefits are one of the best I'ver ever had.

Redundancies aren't exclusive to ntl you know. Look around all comms & finance companies, they're all at it...

As I said, it depends on the department you work for Also, as I said as well, I got this information from my girlfriend who has worked for Cable & Wireless and then ntl for 6 years across several departments...

Just because you got nothing, doesn't mean all other employees do as well...

I was there for nearly 8 years in a central support finance function, I know most of the depts, and I also see what was spent on them...

Re: Carving a career at NTL

Hi, having been there only a few days but it is a briliant brilliant place to work.

I was taken aback at the whole culture in my dept and the fact that we are allowed radio whilst working. plus the benefits and further education package are great!

Not only this but the demographic of the dept is my age group band, so we all have something in common etc. And i am already being asked to events or round to the pub for a bevvy after work.

The benefits are great to...

I just want to thank you all for your responses, and yes in the first week i have been there, i can safely say i made a sound choice with accepting the job.

Plus there are so many new starters coming on board i am not alone. So i think i can do good things here..

Nothing personal against you but it's really depressing to see them firing engineering staff and recruiting accountants to count the money they save doing it.

I found ntl's benefits package to be 'ok' but nothing special, it's normal to have those benefits from an 'American' company. I've slightly better benefits now.

Don't thank ntl for the opportunity by the way, they employ you because they think that you'll make or save them money

As I said nothing personal against you, I was merely saying that I disagree with ntl hiring more people behind desks while firing the people who keep the services running.

Nothing to do with people having or not having jobs at all, more to do with me struggling to see how hiring a load of accountants while firing and outsourcing customer service and engineering will fix the billing, customer service or network performance and reliability issues.

That's ntl for you though...

All the best in the new job
