ntl sees good results in new training and development activities

The biggest load of b****x i've heard, since Tony "Spin" Blair came to power!!!!
NTL's idea of training is a CD!!. They need to get real, they had perfectly good trainers at a purpose built center and they shut it, at a huge loss!
And all the time installers (who are left to there own devices) are smashing cabs open, pulling jumpers out willy nilly (and leaving the doors open so oiks smash them up,) and leave the subs not working.
Really improving the customer experiance!!
Hurrah for the Big 5

Re: ntl sees good results in new training and development activities

Suppose everyone has their own experiances, personaly, I've always found CS staff great to deal with, guess it depends on what part of the country you live, and where your call gets routed to.

I have just been taken on by those contractors you love so much , To change the way they are trained. Well at least here in the North West.

Total new way of training which is over 4 weeks with tests at the end and ongoing evaluation. It will take time to take effect, But i hope it will help to reduced the lost hours to silly mistakes that happen now.

The first of those training course's started on Monday of this week, It includes Telco CATV and Broadband installation.

Now you can mock it all you want but i do hope it will help.

They are not training me. I have been taken on as a trainer in the North West, and i am working with another trainer to change the training system for the better. My outlook is if we can give the installers the correct training, It will give them a better outlook on the job and hopefully see it as a long term job and not a in between job.

Re: ntl sees good results in new training and development activities

I worked for a contactor but was trained by a ex service tech hence I knew more about the job than most

BUT

Training fixes only one part of bigger problem what about

Excesive workload
Lack of proper tools
Lack of test equiptment
Lack of cab keys
Low pay (On 2.5 basic more with BT and on lowest rung of grade cos trainee)

?

Agree with what you said except this

Its not the installers fault they but under pressure to get completion rates but only given half the keys (if they lucky)

Re: ntl sees good results in new training and development activities

I'm all in favour of training the installers, but the bottom line here is that they're treated like S*** by everyone, from ntls managers who treat them like disposable rubbish, all the way down to their own supervisors.

A while back I overheard one of the blokes round our way getting a rollicking and I have to say that if anyone spoke to me the way that he was spoken to I would have laid him on his back and jumped all over him.
Anyway this lad was taken on as an installer, then told he was now a storeman. Within a couple of weeks the number of crews had doubled and he was now also the fleet "manager". His rollicking was because it was now taking him twice as long to get the crews out in the mornings. In the words of the supervisor the fact that the amount of crews had gone up from 30 to 50 was a pathetic "expletive" excuse and if he didn't like it he knew where the door was, so naturally this bloke walked out of it.

I hope Bill that your successful, but imho the only way to get these folks to view the job as anything other than a stopgap is to bring them back in house and treat them like human beings again. Unfortunately ntl doesn't agree it prefers to put profit before treating folks with dignity.
