London Tube journeys have taken a gigantic leap into the 21st century with the launch of Virgin Media’s next generation WiFi service on London Underground. From today (7 June) passengers can get online and stay in touch with the world above at King’s Cross and Warren Street Tube stations. Oxford Circus and Green Park Tube stations will go live from tomorrow (8 June), with Victoria and Euston going live on 9 June, meaning passengers on the Victoria line will be the first to benefit from WiFi

Virgin Media Inc. ( VMED ), one of the leading entertainment and communication service providers in the U.K, is planning to lease out its Wi-Fi mobile network, which are placed in the London Underground stations. We believe that renting out its network to other operators will act as a new revenue stream for the company in addition to the revenue opportunity from the existing Wi-Fi customers.

Earlier, Virgin Media had won the contract to roll out Wi-Fi network in and around the city of London and in the process had outbid rivals BT Group Plc ( BT ) and Telefonica S.A. ( TEF ) owned O 2 . During the Olympic Games, commuters using laptops, mobiles and tablets in the Underground tunnel can access the internet for free. However, once the Olympics conclude and the free service expires, the company plans to rent out its Wi-Fi network to rival operators Vodafone Group ( VOD ), BT, O 2 , and TalkTalk. The company has initiated its bidding process under a wholesale agreement, which is expected to be launched in September.

Currently Virgin are lagging behind Sky, BT & 02 who offer this service free to their customers.

I would expect he means when will Virgin roll out a Metro Wi-Fi service, as indeed they are now exploring with many Local Authorities.

I doubt he expects the Northern line to be extended to Sheffield.

Didn't they abandon that idea in favour of "4G" microsites? Or was it the other way round?

Must be the other way around, I admit I'm not very close to this as I am other stuff but I do know that they are trying to use the experience gained on the Tube project to roll out to a metro project.

Birmingham, I believe, is the next favoured option.

What I meant was to be able access wifi hotspots throughout the UK like BT & Sky customers can and not limited to just the London tube stations.

Millions of EE, Vodafone and Virgin Media customers will be able to enjoy full WiFi access across London Underground following the deal, keeping the majority of Tube passengers connected for no extra cost.
