because I very much doubt it is going to have a problem achieving 60% of it's rated speed. The only thing which would stop it from doing that is if the physicaly capacity wasnt available on the 4 channels it was using.

I am 100% confident that it will do it and if you think it wont then I would love to have a friendly wager of it with you

100Mbit ports will only get around 95Mbits, you wouldn't want people complaining they're missing out of 5Megs would you?

Besides, VM seems to set their speeds slightly higher than the stated speeds, for instance 100Mbit is actually set at 110Mbit on the modem config so you do benefit from a router with gigabit ports.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

100Mbit ports will get around 100Mbit. That's why it's called a 100Mbit port.

VM trying to skew their speedtest results doesn't change the definition of what 100Mbit is.

100Mbit will get 100Mbit signal rate. Actual throughput will be less due to IP headers, etc.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

And back in the old days, that's what speed meant, not through some silly web page with a flash based speedtest app. A 100mb port will happily exceed 97mbps of IP throughput.

Go read this: https://kb.doit.wisc.edu/wiscnet/page.php?id=11778

You'll see that you lose 5.2% of bandwidth due to headers. Your 100Mbit ethernet will only ever be able to transfer TCP/IP data at a maximum of 94.8Mbit no matter what you do.

he is right actually, 99% of 100mbit services around the world are provisioned on 100mbit ports.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

This is a true story, when I was at uni my pc had a 100mbit NIC and I always got 1-2mb/sec over the uni lan. When I went back in my 2nd year I was one of the first peeps back and my connection was the only one active in all the halls all weekend because I was sad enough to stay in the same room At the time, on Friday nights you had Alias on, Stargate SG1 and a couple of others tv progs in the US of A and I downloaded them all from streamload Saturday morning at exactly 12.5mb/sec. At the time it blew me away because I had only just come off dialup at home at got VMs 512k bb. Although I am inclined to agree with gavchap in theory, my experience showed me that it is possible. I wish I had a gigabit network card back then just to see what speed I could get off the uni connection.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

the point is an actual 100mbit service is supposed to include overheads not exclude them.

And? Not everybody or everything uses TCP.

Industry standard defines the speed of a connection as the speed of the underlying transport medium, not that your TCP speedtest rate. Once again, I don't care what your silly web based flash app speedtest tells you, the connection transfers 100mbps of data and how much overhead or what protocol you want to push over it is entirely your own business.

P.S. You can easily change one setting and generate enough overheads to turn a 100mbps connection into only giving you 40mbps of layer-7 throughput, does that mean it is not a 100mbps connection?

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

Hi all,

Can anyone i.e. a VM techie confirm when Edmonton in Enfield is being upgraded to 100MB. Im in N9 area and a sales rep just told me I had to pay £49 to get new fibre optic cable installed. The letter i got from Virgin says the upgrade is FREE. Im on 50MB at the moment, so wondered if anyone has the 100MB yet?

Thanks

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

All areas are already 100mbit enabled and there will already be people on 100/10. What you want to know is when you are going to get the free speed upgrade. You can look on the vm website for the rough date but nobody will give you an exact date because things can always go wrong and cause delay. Your line will be absolutely fine for 100mbit, you might need a new modem though which they'll give you for free
