hilarious call center call
Why on earth, though it makes a bit of sense, are those indians now putting on such fake americanised accents?
I just makes them sound even more patronising.
Got off a call then, a simple one about my bill, and it ended up in me hanging up. I simply asked "why are you putting on that awful accent" the reply, "I don’t know what you are talking about sir", in a full on Indian accent!
What on earth are they being told to do out there! its seriously making Virgin Media’s brand look like some primary school science project and it should be stopped - but it wont!

They aren't. The ones with the American accent are in Manilla - and they have an American accent because thats the version of English they learn rather than 'British' english

Maybe you should ask the same thing to the Scottish or Mancunicans next time you get through to them and see how far you get. Everyone has an accent, just because it's different to yours doesn't mean its 'put on'
Also, how is this News?

as Ben says, you got through to our Manilla call centre. They learn American English there, so pick up the accent.
That was very rude of you to say that to the agent too, IMHO.

Re: hilarious call center call
I have spoken to them both as a customer and in work and have absolutely no issue with their accent and you can tell they are not from India, you do realise that the is also a South African call centre used by Virginmedia as well.
I do find it condescending though when someone calls through and asks if I am based in India with my obvious Liverpool accent.

Re: hilarious call center call
Love it when someone posts a load of blinkered, parochial tosh, only to discover that no-one else agrees with them

Re: hilarious call center call
That you thought his accent was 'full on Indian' when you were speaking with a Filipino is priceless, as is your putting the phone down on him due to his accent annoying you.
You may not have liked his accent, you think he has a fun time dealing with everything from Queen's English to Geordie, Scouse and of course those lovely, thick accents found in parts of Scotland?
I speak with a mid-Atlantic accent at times due to spending a lot of time both physically in North America and dealing with people from the US and Canada. When speaking with them I even switch to using Americanisms and pronouncing words differently for their convenience.
This is not uncommon. He learned American English so pronounces it with an American accent, just as when a person learns French they generally try to speak it in a French accent or Spanish in a Spanish accent.
The most hilarious part about the call is your ignorance and rudeness tbh.

As said above in Philippines they learn American English, it's not that they are putting it on, it's how they have been taught to talk.
And generally actually filipinos talk better English than Indians and are easier to understand, ok their English is not perfect, but they are understandable. Unlike some Indian call centres... Generally also they are polite and well mannered when speaking on the phone

It won't stop because these country's are so cheap to pay staff they earn on the low end about £220 per month!! And work nearly 10 hours a day.. Yet in manila all our companies are setting up there and America.. To name a few, t-mobile, vm, prudential insurance, 118 118, loads of telemarking companies, hsbc, j.p Morgan etc absolutely loads I'd imagine same in India, although to be honest I would rather talk to a filipino person than Indian American accent is better than an Indian accent when it comes to understanding them
