Coverage...

Why is it that the whole world around me (southend, westcliff, chalkwell...) appears to have cable coverage but I am still stuck with BT and hence ADSL?
It seems that when the cable installers were coming down the main road that links all of us, they got to Leigh-on-Sea and skipped it, moving on and starting up again a few miles down the road? Leigh is not a small place, I don't understand why it was skipped when the rest of the local area was done - A good 10 or more years ago, when the only cable was telewest.

Is there any way of finding out if there are future plans to cable the area?

Re: Coverage...

There are no future plans to cable anywhere.

I sympathise though; at Uni 2 streets south of me are cabled, and so is the area north of me - but I'm stuck in the middle with Sky.

Unhappy Re: Coverage...

Grrrrrr..... It's no wonder the UK is getting left behind. Maybe we should all move to Sweden where Gavlenet will happily provision a 100Mbit or 1Gbit/sync connection for €30/mnth (+ inst fee)

Re: Coverage...

If I recall correctly, in Sweden the cabling of the country was assisted by government funding. Precisely the opposite happened here, cable companies paid the government for the franchises, and then had to fund their digging. Then they ran out of money, and have to service their phenomenal debt created by that initial digging operation. leaving nothing left to fund further extensions of network areas,

Re: Coverage...

I think VM are looking at servicing these other areas once they roll out IPTV next generation tv in 2009/2010 through their deal with Cable and wireless. Give it a couple of years and at least you will have the choice?

I never said it was did i?

I know full well what cable & wireless is. At least with the exchanges unbundled you can reach speeds up to 24meg. Better than the limited 16meg some exchanges have.

Re: Coverage...

comparison without the marketing hype.

cable = synch speed equal to product rated speed.
llu (adsl) = synch speed depending on line capabilities, 24mbit probably something silly like 0.1% of people. 16mbit probably under 10% 8mbit under 30%.

The service will be completely different.

I am aware the service will be completely different. I think you are putting words in my mouth my friend.

I know that even with this IPTV service being created it will be no where near as reliable a service than on net customers will get but more customers get more choice as reach is expanded. It will be the same as other IPTV companies with customers getting exchange speed problems causing juttering pics like they get with BT VISION.

The guy may want cable services and if he does he would have to move to a cabled area. But this is going to be the next best thing for him if he wants to move providers.

Re: Coverage...

ahh some honesty well done.

I think to be fair VMs service will beat the likes of BT vision as c&ws equipment (ex bulldog) is better than BT wholesales, the broadband side of it hard to say, bulldog broadband was decent quality when it was around but who is to say VM wont apply a STM to it.

What do you mean honesty well done as if i am some kind of liar? I never pretended C&w was going to be a superior network anyway. He wants VM services and i explained they will be offering a tv service in his area in the near future. Yet again you're putting words in my mouth. I never said it will be surperior or worse. It's obvious it will be worse because you can't get the same speeds through copper than you can from fibre to the cabinet.
The broadband side of it will be just as bad as BT's i think. It all depends on exchange distance. I think the off net customers using iptv would get a really raw deal compared to on net customers. Yet i think VM's might be better than BT because they don't charge for the likes on VOD if you're on the top package yet BT are charging customers for BBC reply which is basically a 7 day catch up service.
