Are boxes allowed to be sold?
I was just looking at my local newspaper, and saw someone was selling them £90.
Is it allowed?
<edit rob: link deleted - we don't want to encourage any of these idiots>
It's the third one down.

Re: Are boxes allowed to be sold?
NO... Totally illegal. Not only is selling a standard cable box illegal as they belong to VM, selling one that 'has many channels' is even more so.

Re: Are boxes allowed to be sold?
Only a few days ago it was reported that police working with VM arrested someone who had numerous Set Top Boxes and other stuff ready to illegaly sell. Anyone buying such boxes and attempting to connect them to the service, could technically be aiding and abetting the seller, handling stolen goods, and obtaining services without payment, all of which could have nasty repercussions for a criminal record.

To be fair, the above (according to the Manchester Evening News) referred to Eurovox boxes, rather than 'chipped' VM boxes. Same applies, though, apart from the 'stolen goods' angle.

Re: Are boxes allowed to be sold?
I am reliably told court cases have been going on in London this week and possibly next week for Virgin fraud.
To answer the thread title/question = Yes
But only by the legal owner of the box.

arrested under the Copyright, Design and Patents Act 1988
I wonder if that same copyright act that would of covered the Jerrold/GI scrambling system that we reverse engineered, manufactured scramblers and used on networks owned by ntl with Jerrold boxes
I guess fraud and copyright is a one way street.

Manchester Evening news speak about set-top boxes that had beed modified (original spelling kept). I could not find any reference about Eurovox boxes...
How can they arrest somebody for selling <deleted> or <deleted> boxes? there is nothing illegal about selling those.
Using them on NTL's network it's illegal. Modding NTL's boxes is also illegal as NTL owns them.
How did he get hold 250 of those STBs? NTL is leaking STBs somewhere.

Reason: unauthorised STB brand names deleted

Re: Are boxes allowed to be sold?
Its not illegal to sell or purchase a cable set top box. However it is illegal to connect them to the virgin network, or any other network.

Yes it is. Since you never own the box (it is rented from VM in the monthly cost), it is technically theft and buying one would be handling stolen goods.
