Re: SKY1 -VS- Virgin1 ?
i would think virgin1 has a bright future ahead with future buys and yes sky one is more establised and has shows thats run for years
eg simpsons ,futurama, road wars etc etc
both channels has good and bad, as stated i prefer virgin 1 but i can see other peoples view as well

Re: SKY1 -VS- Virgin1 ?
Virgin 1 has surprised me somewhat, but in the long run it will not stand a chance against Sky 1 because it will never be able to match Skys spending power.

I thought what a channel would spend on it's programmes is strictly based on the revenue it generates via advertising and viewers.
I and others dont know what budget against income sky 1 operates on. Except for a number of years now the majority of programs on that channel have been screened by them a number of times, basically repeats.
Plus sky 1 has a limited number of potential viewers due to the fact it's only available on sat.
Virgin 1 on the other hand is available on all 3 platforms and unscrambled I think?. So on paper virgin 1 has a potential of several million more viewers than sky 1 if you take into account the non subscribers who still use there sat setup, the several million Freeview users plus a good 3 million cable users.
If virgin 1 can build with new programs over the next year or so it can certainly out-do sky 1 in a few years time.

Re: SKY1 -VS- Virgin1 ?
I moved to sky Digital after that mess last year. Impressed with Virgin one you must be kidding! It’s like the fresh price of bell air, who wants to be a millionaire, Penis envy. I mean what’s that all about apart from seriously second rate. I don’t mind re-runs if it’s worth watching this from a guy who has Dave on and ITV4 with space 1999.
The fact I don’t even think twice about Virgin one says it all for me….unless I start taking an interest in cheap porn and Bingo lotto….
Sad state to be in when they made it sound like this would be a worth while channel….
I’ll stick to My Stargate Atlantis, Weeds, and even the Colour of Magic which I read as a kid so cant wait to see it on the 23rd.

By the looks of your package Sav112 you seem to have the best of both worlds, VM for broadband and Sky for the tv. When my contract runs out I will do the same.

Re: SKY1 -VS- Virgin1 ?
For the sake of a few programs being the only reason you'd move to sat for, is it really worth the hassle and cost of changing?. More so if the dispute is sorted and sky 1 returns during the year. I mean there are always the dvd's arter sky have screened your faverate show. Which has it's advantage when packed with eatra features etc.
Something that I dont know if has been brought up in the past but not mentioned is this thread is the harm that has done sky 1 by moving it off cable!.
What does the loss of a good 3 1/2 million potential viewers do in terms of charges sky 1 can charge for advertising?. If your potential viewer reach goes down by that sort of number, say about 27 % thats has got to hurt the advertising income the channel can charge and generates.
I'd say sky need cable and sky 1 on there as much as cable needs the channel back!.
Also I feel it a bit unfair to compare the quality of a new channel, Virgin 1 against how Sky 1 is now. More so if your 1 of us who can remember the total crap that sky 1 screened when it first came out and for the first couple of years.
If it wern't for the then WWF wrestling programs (where they also used to screen Wrestlemania on) would sky 1 really have survived as a then firth entertainment channel in the UK?.

Re: SKY1 -VS- Virgin1 ?
Cant fault Sky digital, I did not have digital on cable it was just the original analogue box so it was the brilliant jump over to sky for me. My picture and sound improved plus the best thing is getting used to the TV guide and planner. I just hit green and it reminds me.
The reason many years ago was that I was after sky1 when NTL started the roll out, that is why I have cable today. I now have it for BB and cant really fault the 2mb service although my mate next door has just the same service but with better pings some how on BT.
I just would not have the bother of saying right I’ve not got sky1 so I’ll try and remember to buy the box set when it comes out, that kills it for me as for example on Tuesdays – SG Atlantis is a time to chill and relax and I look forward to it.
At least I’m sensible my mate has sky everything including sports which he never uses or his wife or kid. Why pay I always say to him and he just shrugs and says he just wanted everything. I’rather pump it into my BB that just have it for the sake of it….

Bones, Cold case, Eureka, The 4400, Stargate SG1 & Atlantis (will they get the SG1 films and stargate Universe as well), Simpsons, Brainiac and many more on SKYONE Its also all in HD if you want it to be.
As other have posted apart from The Sarah Connor Chronicles ( which FOX/SKY are taking there time with the second series off, only 9 episodes in a season bye the way ) the premieres of Shows, Don't happen on virgin one they happen on Living TV or Bravo. And these 2 channels are now up for sale with the rest of the Network.

Re: SKY1 -VS- Virgin1 ?
Are sky really going to count on Lost when due to the writers strike it has an effective 9 episode series?. Are they due to a boring several week delay really going to claim to be the first netowrk to screen series 4 un-interupted?.
If Virgin Media really have re-screen rights for the show, why not wait untill it's on there than move to sat where you dont get the On Demand services!.

Re: SKY1 -VS- Virgin1 ?
i much prefer Sky 1 content over Virgin 1 content, as i am a fan of Battlestar, stargate,24, lost etc
Terminator is ok, blade is ok, star trek- how often have we seen it already but i still watch the odd episode.
My giref is they advertise "exclusive to Virgin 1" but allow Sky to show Vigrin 1 when Sky wont allow Virgin to show Sky 1.
I know its all down to money, but thats pretty awful. Sky have got win/win situation.
I only stay with Vigrin as i really enjoy the catch up on demand and tv choice on demand features and i can buy the boxsets of the shows i miss at a later date

I didnt know they broadcast the simpsons in HD?
Living TV and bravo arnt for sale.. There was a rumour that VM tv may want to sell its stake in the joint venture with the BBC the uktv channel's. But even if they wanted to sell them, the new buyer has to be aproved by the bbc

Re: SKY1 -VS- Virgin1 ?
i gotta admit, ive never really given virgin1 a chance, mainly because none of the programs interest me, back when i had sky i used to watch sky1 alot, for stuff like the simpsons, futurama, weeds and im pretty sure i used to watch that ross kemp on gangs on sky1 also, so for me sky1 does look on top, but in general, i like virgin better as a whole, my sky used to mess up coz of the weather all the time, and the on demand service isnt quite up to standard as virgins IMO, so i can live without sky1 for everything else im getting with virgin as a whole.
If virgin1 becomes bigger than sky1 its simply because the fact sky1 isnt on the cable anymore, if sky want to make sure virgin1 doesnt win, they need to negotiate and get sky1 back on cable.
oh yeah i forgot about brianiac, what a show!!

It's not about spending power, it's about spending your money wisely. So far V1 have not got a budget as big as Sky's but they have bought some of the biggest shows to come out of the states this year with a nice mix of their own comission too!
Sky would sooner spend a million pound an ep on securing lost and then have nothing left half decent for the rest of the year.

Obviously Sky have acquired each of these series over a number of years and have continously kept the rights to the second third fourth etc season. Virgin1 is a new channel still looking for it's identity. So far it has been launched 5 months and we have already seen 3 new high profile American series launch on the channel such as the riches, the sarah connor chronicles and now Chuck. Plus others like American inventor and death defying rescues that are preety much just fillers.

Sarah Connor was originally billed as a 13 ep season. It is due to the writers strike that it only got 9 not because of the quality of the programme. It's pilor smashed all records and has do faired well since. It's on the FOX network so has a much harder fight on it's hands to get a second season. Fox are known for canning even the best of series they are hard nosed like that.
The channel is five months old and already we are seeing more and more new shows added every week! I don't remember Sky one showing that much new content when it first launched.
The premiers of new shows don't happen on Virgin 1? That's *******s. We have loads of shows premiere on Virgin 1 since it launched. The Riches, Chuck, sarah connor, American inventor, Death defying rescues, Crime invasion, bob the exorcist, death row dogs, city in fear, the envy series etc.
Then there is others due soon such as series 3 of the unit, brits behind bars two Leo houlding!
Oh and by the way Living and Bravo are not for sale! It's the UKTV arm that is currently up for sale.
Vm has an extremely successful portfolio of channels why would they want to give them up and then have no hand in what they get on their platform? That would leave them open to more problems like the Sky one issues. The more channels they can own and supply them selves the better. They not only won't have to pay other suppliers for the channels but they can make sufficient advertising revenue on top of that

Re: SKY1 -VS- Virgin1 ?
I love'd Sky One and I wish I still had it, Virgin 1 shows some programs that are really old, and the only program I watch on Virgin 1 is The American Inventor.
Sky One had all the sweet new episodes of Simpsons, Prison Break, and other programs "are you smarter than a 10 year old" and much more.
so it is Sky One all the way for me! even though I dont have it anymore lol.

Re: SKY1 -VS- Virgin1 ?
Well it's personal opinion on what you deam a 'good program'. Personally I find Are You Smarter (and Noel Edmunds in general) annoying and patronising. Also, the new episodes of the Simpsons are totally unfunny and seem to be imitating Family Guy.
I have Sky at university and I never find myself watching Sky One....and longing for some On Demand facility.
