I would not think that you would be tied in for a further 12 months unless it was made clear to you at the time that condition of the deal was a new 12 month contract.
I queried the one I got and was told that it was valid for 12 months, no mention of being tied in for 12 months, if there is any hassle get onto your local consumer protection department.

Re: retention deal contract?
I’m on a retention package du to me giving notice as I was going to Toucan who were going to give me 8Mb/s broadband telephone line rental and calls free 24/7 without calling back after 57Min and 08 /09 numbers locked off all for £29.00 per month.
I was given a package which I accepted as long as they sent me an email confirming the deal, lucky I did because VM have tried to renege on the deal say the person has left, the person had no right to offer such a deal. The long and short I am still on the deal with no 12 month contract.
That being said if you get a retention deal now they will inform you of this and I understand follow it up with a letter confirming a new 12 month contract.
Please note I do not work for VM just a long suffering customer with slow broadband which makes a mockery of the adverts as seen around:

Well no letter has landed here, so as far as I am concerned I am in the driving seat should I need call retentions again.
All that was said to me was that the deal was valid for 12 months, after 12 months I have to renegotiate, if I am still with them.

Re: retention deal contract?
They told me that there systems would not allow a 12 month deal. So could only offer 3 month deals that must be renegotiated each time they run out.
Seems you get told whatever b****x is the flavour of the moment. Still that's nothin' new is it where VM are concerned.

In fairness you don’t have your TV with them or phone. I have had the full monty since cable came to Letchworth and part of the deal was free dial-up which was very good in those days.
But back on subject I was really going to leave VM and go to ADSL and it was them that made the offer which I understand is not what some have called life but I don’t need to go back to them each year. I still may leave if they don’t sort the BB out.
You say your with BT with your phone. Can I suggest you think about moving to Toucan who will offer to take your line rental over for 8.99 and for another 9.99 you can make all the calls you like to 01 and 02 numbers 24/7 for as long as you like.

Thats how long our recent bb reduction was for too, ends this month i think.
I`ve never actually called this "retentions" though and even that latest bb reduction was offered to us,as were the other reductions/upgrades along the way....and quite rightly too!!
This particular 3 months was on the understanding it was merely "upgrade teething problems" hence the speed issues should have been resolved within that time, according to them anyway??
Apparently now it is our NTL120 so we can only wait and see.
We do have the full monty as far as TV & phone is concerned and if the new modem lying in the Post Office(i think) dont supply something close to 20Mb either then they better have another 3 months+ on the cards as theres two chances of me paying the full £37 for half the service.......little & none.

Actually I do still have VM DTV although it is not connected up. I just haven't got around to cancelling it yet.
I did have a cable phone line once but they could never get it to work and I ended up paying a years line rental for nothing. I was too busy working in those days to bother about it.
I too have had cable almost since it came to town, prolly about 10 years?, analogue was good but digital was woeful from the start and it hasn't improved one bit. Hence my defection. I just couldn't take anymore of "We are altering some settings so you can't use your remote. Please press OK to remove this message" being plastered all over my TV screen 3 times in succession, twice a day at 1:30.

Thanks for the info although as I use the phone so very little these days at £8.99+£9.99 I would end up paying more in total per month than I pay now.

Re: retention deal contract?
Can't get my head round all these M, L, XL etc.
M BB - that's 2Mbit ? - Normally £17.99
M TV - thats the "more or less freeview" one - normally free with phone
M phone - Basic, talk weekends - Normally £11
Depending on how you weigh various factors, you can always find something the VM compares unfavourably against... If you ignore the basically freeview TV selection, then the combined Phone + broadband is a fair bit dearer than some of the BT line takeover options (Talktalk, Tiscali etc.). Means an upheaval if you did have to switch to BT, but this http://www.tiscali.co.uk/products/br...mb-wt-llu.html is what I'd be battering them with for a discount... has talk weekends and 2Mb, comparable to Virgin M phone and M broadband.
At the very least, I'd hope they might do you the 2 for 20 (and leave you with M TV, as you already have an STB installed).
We got a loyalty discount down to "3 for 30" but with XL TV, having been paying full rate for each bit for a long time (spurred to act by the sight of Sky's "See, Talk, Surf" at £26 - comparing the retention deal to that, gives us, at £4 more, a second phone line that we don't use a lot since broadband, 2Mb broadband aginst Sky's "up to 8", and of course, the loss of Sky1,2 - but no ugly sat dish) - could have tried for a tougher deal, but at least it's a "lifetime" loyalty bonus.

Re: retention deal contract?
you can have the 2 for 20, broadband and phone and add the M tv ontop of that for free.

I agree, £20 is a good deal for the package you want, as that's the price it is.

Re: retention deal contract?
Well, i was going to give it till the end of the week with our nice new modem but i got itchy phone fingers today after seeing the same old ??Mb service...My current agreement has just ended i think so no point waiting.
Took about an hour what with Indian tech support and disconnected calls etc but i eventually got some English chap who finally agreed with me,"escalated the issue"(again?) and refunded the call.
Had to call cs back on 150 to have the disconnected call refunded...as well as having our current bb arrangement continued for another 3 months untill November.
I do love getting through to those lovely Scottish lasses.
