VM - First Impressions

I has VM telephone, TV and broadband (3 for £30) installed last Thursday and so far everything has gone to plan.

The telephone, TV and broadband worked from installation. I asked for my telephone number to be carried over from BT and this was done five days after installation.

My only problems have been getting he WRT54GL router to find the broadband connection and to get my JVC video reorder the record the TV programme.

With help from Linksys (see other post) I now have it working so I am just left with the video recording problem.

I did phone Tech Support early Saturday morning and the call was answered after 12 minutes. They couldn't solve the problem there and then so they promised to call back and did so after a further 20 minutes. I did not think that this was unacceptable in the present circumstances.

With ADSL it was often suggested that the modem should be left on 24/7 but I have not seen any similar suggestion for cable. So my question is this - should the cable modem and/or set-top box be left on 24/7?

I have the Samsung set-top box with two scarts, one marked TV the other VCR.

Are there any differences between the output of these two scarts and, if so, what is the difference? Can anyone offer a link giving more info on this box?

Many thanks in advance.

Re: VM - First Impressions

The tv SCART can output in RGB whilst the video one cannot.

Some info here

http://www.ricability-digitaltv.org....-smt-2110c.htm

assuming it's this model you have. If not you'll find others around there too.

I only switch my cable modem off if I have to reboot in the event of problems and only sometimes place my STBs (V+ and Pace) into standby, although rarely.

HTH

Cheers

Thanks EssDee.

At the moment I have all the electrical equipment associated with the TV, Samsung, TV, DCD, VCR all on the same socket and I switch all off at night.

Is this advisable?

With my broadband setup I have the modem on a separate switch and I switch everything, except the modem, off at night.

Should be ok to switch off. I always just have a nagging doubt about it personally due to the fear that reinitialisation may not 'find' the Virgin network again (a sort of 'it's working so I'll leave it alone'!).

I would recommend, though, that you switch off all your TV kit by their own individual power switches first before switching off at the socket.

Re: VM - First Impressions

I believe the recommendation is that you should not turn off your STB at night - since that's when the updates are sent through. Put it into standby if you want, but not off at the switch. I think if you have a V+ it does specifically state not to turn it off at night.

the stb/v+/modem are designed to be connected at all times. You can put these units into stanby but not advisable to disconect for prelonged periods

OK, once again thanks for the advice.

I hadn't thought about automatic updates!

You can put into standby - but it doesn't make much difference. As EssDee says, the only time my STB is powered off is when I am rebooting it.
