Virgin Media hires 116 new apprentices

# 25 February 2014, 15:37 by Chris T

Virgin Media has hired 116 new apprentice engineers and managers this week, at the company’s annual trainee graduation ceremony in Coventry.

The graduates, from the company’s own two-year training programme, have been studying for a range of nationally-recognised qualifications.

They will now be put to work on VM’s network and in business operations all over the UK.

The company has put almost 800 people through the training scheme since establishing it in 2008. The government now plans to inject a further £20 million funding into it in October.

Skills minister Matthew Hancock said: “The programme is off to an excellent start with strong backing from employers and training providers.

“We have responded to this demand by providing additional investment, and in time traineeships will become the clear route for young people looking to get the crucial grounding they need in the world of work.”

Chris Starling, Head of Apprenticeships for Virgin Media, said: “Our apprenticeship programme has gone from strength to strength with huge demand for opportunities in recent years. Virgin Media’s courses offer a superb insight into our business and are an excellent gateway to stimulating and prosperous careers.”

National Apprenticeship Week takes place in March and Virgin Media plans to kick off its search for its next batch of trainees during the event.

There are four apprentice areas, including installation and service, network engineer, network planning and management.
