NTL sides with Microsoft technology

# 2 June 2004, 14:28 by Nemesis

A £75m consolidation of its IT has seen NTL roll out a host of Microsoft’s latest desktop and server operating systems, and a host of middleware upgrades.

NTL has installed Microsoft’s Windows Server operating system, Microsoft Office 2003, Biztalk middleware and SQL Server 2000 databases. Previously NTL used a mix of operating systems from different suppliers.

The Microsoft contract, is part of a project to cut the number of customer databases containing information on residential customers from 27 to one. NTL believes the database consolidation will provide call centre staff with faster access to information and thus improve customer service.

“Our IT strategy called for integrated, reliable and well-supported enterprise-wide systems that lower our total cost of ownership,” said Phil Pavitt, chief information officer at NTL.

“We simply do not believe that the Linux operating system can do that. We are sure that the Microsoft platform will save us a considerable amount in reduced downtime.”

As part of its IT consolidation, NTL is using Biztalk Server 2002 to support customer billing, payments and collections.

Other benefits of standardising on Microsoft systems, according to NTL, include its reliability and the ability to handle a greater number of transactions.

... we shall see ;)
