Virgin Media’s Superhub combines the functions of a broadband cable modem and a wired and wireless router. Unfortunately, the present Superhub, has often been found wanting by many users, especially those using wireless connectivity. There have been number of firmware patches and trials over the current kit’s lifespan, but criticism remains. Frequently there are recommendations on sites such as Cable Forum, for customers to place the Superhub into modem only mode, and to connect that into a customer purchased router.

Trials have been taking place over the last few weeks with a select panel of customers. Until now they have been under a non disclosure agreement. Some aspects of that have been lifted and we can now reveal some first details of Superhub 2.

The full specifications for Superhub 2 aren’t yet available. It will support the DOCSIS 3.0 standards with channel bonding of multiple upstream and downstream channels. There are 4 gigabit wired LAN ports together with a USB port although what devices can be connected to the latter is not yet clear. It provides wireless 802.11b/g/n connectivity at up to 300Mbit/s and supports both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz frequencies simultaneously (current Superhub is one or the other). Notably the new Superhub has an increased provision of internal aerials to improve the wireless stability. We also understand the internal chipset of the Superhub 2 is improved with dedicated chips for each of the cable and wireless functions which offers better stability than the current single chipset model. There is an added bonus for those fed up with finding sticky tape to cover those glowing LEDs, 3 adjustable brightness settings.
