VM TV subscribers miss England game due to outage

# 20 June 2012, 11:50 by Chris T

Virgin Media TV subscribers in parts of Greater Manchester missed England’s Euro 2012 victory over Ukraine due to a network outage.

Angry residents of Prestwich, Bury, lit up the boards at VM callcentres as they phoned in their droves to find out when the game was going to come back on.

Many took to Twitter claiming to have been forced to endure on-hold music for up to an hour, missing Wayne Rooney’s 48th-minute winning goal and suffering the charms of Justin Bieber instead.

The screen went blank 10 minutes into the game at 7.55pm. Service was not resumed until after the ref blew the whistle on the tie that helped England win their group and progress to a quarter-final appointment with Italy.

A Virgin Media spokeswoman said a power failure near Salford was to blame and the company was investigating. She refused to say how many homes were affected but added: “We’re extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused.”
