Virgin Media's Olympics 2012 coverage includes HD and Red Button

# 18 April 2012, 09:45 by cfteam

Virgin Media will be carrying coverage of the London Olympics 2012 from the BBC and Eurosport. Highlights include:

  • 24 BBC live channels in SD and HD
  • 3D transmissions from both BBC and Eurosport
  • Advanced Red Button Interactive Services on the TiVo platform.

Virgin Media’s Press Release states the additional Olympics coverage will be provided at no extra cost to their cable TV subscribers.

Standard BBC coverage on BBC One, BBC three, BBC One HD and BBC HD will be supplemented by additional standard and high definition BBC streaming. This will enable every Olympic sport to be viewed live. A total of 24 live channels will be available through the Electronic Programme Guide or a BBC Red Button Application. TiVo Users, by virtue of that platform’s extra IP connections, will get an exchaustive catch up service.

Eurosport and BBC will also be providing some 3D coverage including the opening and closing ceremonies, together with selected live events and highlights. Eurosport 3D will launch on the 27th July and is expected to provide a mix of eight hours live 3D coverage alongside of 4 hours of highlights.

There will also be the Virgin Media On Demand Catch Up services which should include the BBC iPlayer Olympics content and some Eurosport 3D highlights. And of course customers with the V+ or TiVo can set their own recordings.

This is all good news for those who look forward to the London Olympics spectacle. The only problem is how many couch potatoes will be created by all the viewers watching others working up a sweat?
