Virgin to extend cable service to a further 100,000 homes

# 8 August 2011, 05:40 by Chris T

Virgin Media has confirmed plans to pass an additional 100,000 homes with its cable TV and broadband network by the end of 2011.

The network extension will double the company’s presence in Southampton after extensive talks with the city council.

VM is also expecting to be able to extend its reach in other parts of the UK by the end of the year. So far in 2011 its cables have reached a further 73,000 homes in Northern Ireland and West London.

And it has its eye on still further expansion in 2012, with up to 500,000 further homes set to be linked up to the Virgin Media network.

In Press briefings this morning, the company has been very keen to point out that homes are connected to its fibre-optic network with high-capacity coaxial cables, whilst homes getting connected to BT Infinity still rely on a traditional twisted copper wire to link them to the service’s new fibre cables.

Jon James, Virgin Media’s executive director of broadband, said: “By extending our unique fibre optic network to parts of the country previously outside our traditional heartland, we’re ensuring more people can experience the compelling advantages that a superfast connection can bring and in doing so, support the Government’s digital ambitions. Today’s increasingly digital lifestyle requires better broadband and we’ve seen a strong response from the communities we expand into who are crying out for quality services. We’re adding thousands of homes to our network every month as our expansion programme continues and we look for opportunities to give more people access to the fastest broadband and best in home entertainment.”
