Virgin Media admits superhub problems

# 23 February 2011, 16:40 by Chris T

It’s official: the Virgin Media Superhub can slow down your internet connection.

After weeks of customer complaints in posts at Cable Forum and on VM’s own official forum, the company has acknowledged that some customers may be experiencing what it calls a “data throughput problem”.

The Superhub is the piece of kit that customers must have in their home in order to connect to Virgin Media’s 30, 50 and 100Mb broadband products.

A spokesman told The Register yesterday that VM stands by its claim that the Netgear hardware inside the Superhub is sound, but that it is “actively investigating reports of reduced performance under some configurations” and is testing possible solutions.

“… we expect to resolve the issue by a firmware update which will be automatically pushed out to SuperHub users as soon as a fix has been confirmed,” the spokesman added.

No date has been set for the release of the firmware update, but el Reg speculates that it should be coming “soon”.
