Sky Catch-Up Weekend for switching customers

In the latest round of the TV wars Sky has announced details of a dedicated “Catch-Up Weekend” this Easter in which some of Sky One’s most popular entertainment series will be replayed back-to-back. The idea being to offer new customers joining Sky from Virgin Media the opportunity to catch up with hit shows such as Lost, 24, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis.

Shows airing on the Sky One catch-up weekend this Easter are:

Saturday 7 April:
Battlestar Galactica, 12:00-17:00, 5 episodes (Episodes 10-14 inclusive)
Saturday 7 April:
24, 21:00-02:00, 5 episodes (Episodes 10-14 inclusive)
Sunday 8 April:
Lost, 12:00-17:00, 5 episodes (Episodes 10-14 inclusive)
Monday 9 April:
Stargate SG1, 13:00 – 15:00, final 2 episodes of the series (Episodes 19 & 20)
Monday 9 April:
Stargate Atlantis, 15:00-17:00, final 2 episodes of the series (Episodes 19 & 20)

In addition, Sky One will broadcast new episodes of 24 and Lost in their usual slots on Sunday 8th April.

Brian Sullivan, Sky’s Managing Director, Customer Group, comments:

“We’re as disappointed as Virgin Media’s customers that the channels they enjoy are no longer available to them. We’re open to further talks with Virgin Media and our last offer remains on the table.

“We don’t want anyone to miss out on the TV they love. With many Virgin Media customers switching to Sky and others expected to follow, we’re making it as simple as possible to stay right up to date. What’s more, if better TV wasn’t incentive enough, many Virgin Media customers can save hundreds of pounds a year with our fast broadband and great-value phone packages.”

We contacted Virgin Media, and James Kydd, managing director of marketing at Virgin Media, responded:

“Sky’s current marketing is a short term, tactical campaign aimed at luring customers away from Virgin Media in light of them withdrawing their channels from our service.

“We, however, are focused on investing our money in real long-term benefits for our customers by doubling the number of top TV shows available on demand, from 2,700 hours to 6,000 hours by the end of the year. This includes series like Lost, Nip/Tuck, The O.C and Grey’s Anatomy.

“We’ve been inundated with messages of support from customers – many will be Cable Forum regulars – who value us taking a stance against Sky’s ridiculous demands. But we won’t rest on our laurels, when we launched a month ago, we promised to put the power of the entertainment industry back in the hands of UK consumers, giving them the service they deserve and the value they’d expect and that’s what we’re committed to do.”
