Virgin lose just a few hundred customers to Sky

# 4 March 2007, 14:17 by Paul M

A report in todays Telegraph claims that so far Virgin Media have lost only a few hundred customers to Sky as a result of the withdrawal of Sky’s basic channels from the Virgin Media Cable TV Service.

Virgin Media revealed that just 100 customers a day have cancelled subscriptions since Sky One was withdrawn from the cable service on Wednesday night – there are no signs of a mass move of Virgin customers to Sky.

It is estimated that Sky need to sign up at least 150,000 extra subscribers to cover the £60m a year in lost revenue from carriage fees and advertisment sales.

In response, Sky claims it has taken “hundreds” of additional bookings since Wednesday, but hoped this would rise over time.

Jeremy Darroch, Sky’s finance director said ;

“I’ve been in our call centres all day today, We’ve seen strong demand for our rescue package. ”
“In the short term there is a financial cost and we’ll have to bear the consequences of that. They have to be willing to pay a fair price.”

Darroch is apparently in no hurry to see his channels back on Virgin Media.
